In the early 80-s Mercedes-Benz had a lot of troubles. The company was in decline due to the oil crisis of 1973. The company raised the question of producing more compact and efficient car.В In 1982 such a car appeared. In was Mercedes-Benz 190 (W201). This model was a rival to BMW 3. The car lost 160 kg of its weight because the length of the body was reduced and new lighter alloys were used. It was the first car with wedge shaped body.
The company broke the tradition and was still giving index В«190В» to all Mercedes-Benz W201 models regardless engine volume. The car was named Baby Benz and it was very simple and reliable.
At the very beginning the model was equipped with ABS but it was just and add-on. The trunk volume was 410 l and it was very convenient fir city driving. Rear seat was not roomy enough that is why the car can be considered as fourseater.
Mercedes W201
In 1983 September the model Mercedes-Benz 190 D appeared. It was a 2.0 liter diesel.
In 1984 September the power of the engine increases and it was 105 hp then.
Five cylinder diesel which appeared in 1985 was not only fast-speed but efficient. Fuel consumption of old engines is still no more than 9 liters per 100 kilometers.
In 1988 September the model was tuned. The bulk got broad plastic safety plate beneath the doors, the bumpers were altered and there were innovative seats.
In may 1993 on the Daimler-Benz factory in Bremen the Mercedes-Benz W201 model was replaced by W202 sedan C-class. The reason was that in the early 90-s it became evident that Mercedes-Benz 190 should save its positions on the market. But the car should be tuned. The vehicle attracted attention of such famous tuners as Brabus and AMG.
